STEM Education

Competency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is critical for professionals seeking global leadership in today’s competitive, technologically driven economy, with the demand for global leaders with STEM background is projected to increase by 62% in 2020.

In 2018, the National Science & Technology Council in Washington, D.C. charted a new STEM Education Strategic Plan with the goal to provide all Americans access to high-quality STEM education here in the United States and improve the U.S. standing as a global leader in STEM education.

ITU’s American STEM Initiative aims to help close the gap between American and global STEM education by providing STEM literacy programs, courses, and workshops to enrich student learning by challenging them to think critically, conduct research, problem solve and prepare them to take on leadership roles within the field.

ITU’s STEM program areas
The program features four areas of learning: co-curricular activities, support for professional development workshops, opportunities for discovery research seminar series, and community engagement events to create learning based experiences for students. ITU’s American STEM initiative encourages a more meaningful way for students to innovate and develop a creative approach to viewing and solving real world problems. This interdisciplinary learning experience is designed to cultivate creativity and confidence in the next generation of STEM leaders. Multiple customized course options are available, so students can focus in on particular areas of concentration.

“Science is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world…”

President Barack Obama, March 23, 2015

Internships are a vital way for
students to transfer course
theory, concepts, and skills
om the graduate-level
classroom to their career

At ITU, we believe internships are a vital way for students to transfer course theory, concepts, and skills from the graduate-level classroom to their career. For this reason, our students participate in an internship starting in their first trimester as a core part of the curriculum for all of the master degree programs as affirmed by the university‘s Academic Quality Committee(AQC).  Students are allowed to participate in a part-time internship counts for one credit hour or a full-time internship for three credit hours with a maximum of 10 credit hours per degree allowed

As part of the American STEM Initiative, admitted students will have access to the ITU Internship Opportunity Board, a program-exclusive, curated database that allows students to find internships with our local business partners and surrounding businesses. Benefits of internships include a boost in self-confidence, industry and academic networking, opportunities to explore various career options and develop marketable skills
