Information Literacy: Critical Skill Set for the Global Economy

ITU’s mission “empowers people to lead successful, enriching lives as meaningful contributors to the global community.” The global economy, with its rapidly evolving technology is creating vast amounts of data, information, tools and formats, of various use and quality. Information literacy is internationally recognized as the skill set for present and future success. It is defined as “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” (The Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, ACRL, 2000).

The ITU library staff constantly works together with faculty to develop the following skills needed for people to become information literate: Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Communication, Teamwork, Technical Literacy, Research & Information Literacy, Responsibility & Leadership.

Please click here to read information about Information Literacy at ITU and to review Recommended Resources for the six stages of information literacy.

These timeslots serve as an open time for students to get assistance on research, as well as locating materials in the ITU library, and other nearby libraries. It is also a chance to have general library questions answered, and suggest any ideas that would help improve the library.
