Housing Options

Currently, International Technological University does not have dormitories and all students live off campus. Students who do not have their own cars take public transportation. It is important to consider a number of factors before choosing a place to live to ensure a comfortable experience suited to your schedule and other needs. Below are some questions to think about and ask while apartment-hunting:

Location, Location, Location

  • Is it close enough to ITU? Is it close to public transportation? What is the parking situation at or near the property (if you have your own car)?
  • Is there enough natural light?
  • Is it in a safe neighborhood where you feel comfortable walking by yourself, even at night?
  • Is it close by convenient stores, grocery stores, etc.?
  • Is it a quiet neighborhood, a lively “college” environment, or a family environment? Which suits you best?

How Much Does It Cost?

  • Almost every landlord will ask for a security deposit of 50-100% of the monthly rent, so figure in paying for the first two months upon signing the lease.
  • Ask if there are any long-term incentives, such as decreased rent or deposit if you sign a longer lease (most will be a 6-month to a 12-month lease, followed by month-to-month).
  • What are the penalty costs for late payment?
  • Does the rent include water, trash, and utilities?

Is It Good Enough?

  • How old is the complex?
  • Does it have any health violations (the manager/landlords is required by law to provide you with that information in your lease packet)?
  • How clean is it inside and outside the apartment?
  • Are the laundry and trash in a convenient location?
  • If it’s more than two stories high, does it have an elevator?
  • What is their pet policy?
