What is the process for adding/dropping a course?
- Go to the “Calendar” page on the ITU website to check for the deadline.
- If you add/drop a class before the deadline there will be no fee. Students that add/drop after the due date then you will be assessed a fee of $30 ($20 to drop and $10 add) for each course.
- You need to fill in the Add/Drop Form and submit it to the Admissions Department. You can find the Add/Drop Form under the “Student Resources” section found on the “Admissions” page of the ITU website. You can send these documents through fax at 408-331-1026 or mail to 355 W. San Fernando St, San Jose, CA 95113.
Are weekend classes only available for CPT students?
No, weekend classes are available for all students.
What is the minimum amount of courses a student can take during trimester break?
Students can take a minimum of 1 course during trimester break. It is not a “must”.
When is a student eligible to take a trimester break?
The student must be a full-time student for two consecutive trimesters and then he/she will be eligible to take a break the following trimester.
How do I access weekend classes?
You will receive a user id and password once you register for the weekend classes. Go to http://ems.itu.edu, and login with the provided information to access your coursework.
How many core courses are offered this trimester?
Check the current trimester class schedule on the ITU website, and compare the listed courses to the “Core Courses” listed in your degree’s requirements. Requirements for your degree can be found by clicking on the “Academics” tab on the ITU website.
In order to apply to ITU, click on the “Apply Now” in the “Admissions” tab drop-down menu or click here, and choose the checklist relevant to you. To ensure that your application process is smooth, please follow each step carefully.
How long is the admissions process?
- For international students: it will take 2-3 weeks for the processing and to mail it to India.
- For transfer students: it will take 1-2 weeks to process the acceptance letter through initial i-20.
- For change of status students: it will take 2-3 weeks to process the change of status I-20.
What is the maximum amount of credits I can take per trimester?
You can enroll for maximum of 15 credits per trimester.
Can a student extend his/her graduation?
Extensions for graduation are dependent on individual student cases. You must also meet International Student Advisor regarding the extension.
What is the process for changing majors?
- You must fill-out the change of major form and send it to .
- Student can only change their major during their first 2 trimesters.
- International students must get approval from the DSO or ISA. Once you get the approval. It will take 4-5 business days to process the new I-20.
What is the difference between weekday & weekend classes?
- Weekday courses – in-person attendance is mandatory for all class sessions.
- Weekend courses – weekend classes meet six times per trimester. Students must attend all six weekend sessions. Please visit our website for the weekend schedule which can be found by hovering over the “Calendar” tab of the ITU website, and clicking on the schedule for the current trimester.
Can we register with only one course in summer trimester?
Only if a student is on a trimester break can they take less than the required amount of credits for full-time students.

Can I send my application documents online?
No, we do not accept the application documents through fax or e-mail. We require the original documents.

Is health insurance mandatory?
Yes, and it should be valid for at least one complete trimester.
Do I need to attend all the classes?
Yes, attending classes is mandatory.
Can I appear for one class out of the trimester since I stay in other state?
No, students are required to attend all classes, both weekday and weekend sessions.
Teacher Assistant. Teacher Assistants will be present for most class sessions to assist the professor and students.
Once you are registered for a course, your TA will send a walk-through document and student handbook.

How come professors and TAs never reply to my e-mails?
Talk with your TA, and confirm that they have your correct e-mail id.
I need to talk to professor — can you help me?
Check the current trimester class schedule to see when professors will be on the ITU campus. You can also use the Faculty Directory, found as a drop-down menu item below “Contact Us”, to e-mail professors directly. Enrolled students should contact the TA for that class before directly contacting professors.
CPT stands for Curriculum Practical Training. Curriculum Practical Training allows students to receive credit while working on an internship.
- You must submit an offer letter in addition to your registration documents. Without the offer letter the CPT process will be placed on hold, or possibly terminated. The processing time is approximately 4-5 business days. Documents should be sent to Amy Chaung at achaung@itu.edu
- The offer letter for your CPT should include the following information:
- Job title related to your major
- Job description
- Number of hours per week
- Start/End date of CPT
- Confirmation that position is internship based
- Typed on the letterhead and signed by the employer
- In order to process the CPT I-20, a verification e-mail from your employer must be sent to Amy Chaung at achaung@itu.edu. Failure to receive an employer verification e-mail may result in the CPT request being placed on hold until reception of the employer verification e-mail, or possible termination of the request altogether. The employer verification e-mail should include the following information:
- Job title
- Work hours
- Company name and location
- Employer contact details
Can an International/transfer student take CPT from the first trimester?
Yes. Practical training is core to ITU’s educational philosophy, and as such we encourage students who are able to find internships in related to their field of study to begin these from the first day.
How long can a student take full time CPT?
Generally there is no limit to the amount of full-time CPT that a student can take. However, according to SEVP regulations if a student takes more than 12 months of CPT it may disqualify them from taking OPT after they graduate.
How many credits will I receive for taking registering for CPT?
- Full-time CPT students receive 3 credit hours per trimester
- Part-time CPT students receive 1 credit hour per trimester
Optional Practical Training, which allows a student to work after the completion of graduation.
You need to submit the OPT Request Form and send it to Evelyn Tsao at tevelyn@itu.edu. The OPT Request Form can be found in “Student Resources” on the “Admissions” page. For more information regarding OPT, there are OPT slides available on the ITU website.

What is the duration of OPT for MSCE, SE, EE and EM students?
Upon approval students are eligible for a total of 29 months of OPT. Students will initially be issued 12 months of OPT. In order to receive the additional 17 months students must apply for an OPT extension. To maintain their OPT, students must send the details of their employer within 90 days of working at the company. No more than 29 months is allowed for OPT.
Can a student leave the country in OPT period?
No, students are required to stay in the US during their OPT.
What is the duration of OPT for MBA students
MBA students are eligible for only 12 months of OPT.
OPT will only be granted once per degree. The only way to attain another OPT is to apply for a higher educational level or apply for an H1 visa through the government.
Do we need a Travel I-20 while on OPT?
No, a Travel I-20 is not required for OPT students. However, you must send a “Travel Request Form” with “OPT” printed at the top, and submit to Jose Dominguez. You may scan and e-mail the form to djose@itu.edu. Travel I-20s will take 2-3 weeks to process.
Can CPT students pay in installments?
No
Does a student need to submit an internship report every trimester when he takes CPT?
Yes
How many minimum/maximum credits must a student register if he/she takes Full time CPT?
A student on full-time CPT must take 9 total units, which breaks down to 3 units for internship and 6 units for 2 additional course. Please visit the CPT & OPT page for further information.
Can a student work on CPT outside CA?
Yes, as long as that student fulfills all ITU attendance and coursework requirements. ITU provides weekend classes to support the scheduling needs of students on internships.
How many minimum/maximum credits must a student register for if he/she takes Part time CPT?
A student on part-time CPT must take a full course-load of at least nine (9) units.
Difference between part time CPT and full time CPT?
- Part time CPT- students must register for 10units
- Full time CPT- two subjects and one CPT—9 units
How long are the Masters of Science and Masters of Business Administration programs?
The normal duration is 2 years.
Can a student apply for a MBA degree even if his undergraduate background is unrelated to MBA?
You must get approval from the Department Chair.
How can I do apply for an independent study or project?
Contact the professor, submit your independent study/project proposal, and wait for the professor’s response.
Can a student apply for a MS degree even if his undergraduate background is unrelated to MS?
You must get approval from the Department Chair.
Yes, only for green card holders and US citizens.
Does ITU offer Masters in Biopharmaceutical Sciences?
The program is currently under development.
Does ITU offer MS in Health Care Management?
No, we only offer an MBA in Healthcare Management.
Does ITU offer Bachelor of Science in Computer Science?
No.
How many credits can a MBA student choose from MS?
1 course and it is same with MS students as well.
- Step 1 – Make sure no one else is logged in to EMS on your computer. To log out another user, select “Logout”.
- Step 2 – Go to https://ems.itu.edu and find the e-mail field at the centre of the page.
- Step 3 – E-mail address: log in with the e-mail address that you used to register for your account.
- Step 4 – Enter your password.
- Step 5 – Click “Login”.
What if I forgot my old password?
In the login page, you can reset your password by clicking the “Forgot Password” Link. Here you need to enter you username (the e-mail id used to register)
An e-mail with a reset password link will be sent, which will redirect to reset your password.
I’m not receiving the e-mail to reset my password?
If you requested a password reset at https://ems.itu.edu/account/password/request, but didn’t receive your password reset e-mail:
Check the spam or junk mail folder in your e-mail account. Sometimes these e-mails are misdirected.
Where can I find my transcripts in the EMS?
In the EMS, click “Manage Widgets” and select “My Tasks”.
Your grades are listed in your transcript.
How do I upload my assignments and cslos?
Once you are registered in a course, you will see a tab stating “Upload doc/cslo” when logged into the EMS.
Are application fees refundable?
No.
What modes of payment are accepted by ITU?
- Debit/credit card and check payable to ITU/Cashiers check/DD
- If you are paying through credit or debit cards fill the credit card authorization form which is available on our website and there will be 2% administrative costs
- We accept Master, VISA and discover cards
How can I calculate the total cost of completing the credits for my degree?
In order to complete a Masters of Science or Masters of Business Administration degree, students are required to pay $400 per credit and must complete 36 credits.
Is the fee structure different for International & Domestic students?
No. International and Domestic students are given the same fee structure.
You must fill out the Refund Request Form and submit it to Accounting Department. The percentage of refund depends on when your application is sent to our Accounting Department.
Can a student pay for tuition using a wire transfer?
Yes. Please contact the Accounting Department regarding questions about wire transfers.
How old can the bank statement?
It must be the recent one.
Can a student show a Loan Sanction Letter from the bank to process the application?
No. We require an original bank statement with a minimum balance of $17,500.
Do we accept stocks, CD’s, property, Credit Card statement for showing the amount to process the application?
No.

Can I pay for my courses by installments?
The Tuition Installment Plan allows for students to pre-arrange for application and/or tuition fees to be paid in installments. Please fill-out the INSTALLMENT PLAN PROMISSORY NOTE, and submit the form to the Accounting department.
What should I do if I have an Incomplete Grade?
Contact the TA or the professor of that particular course for further advising. Check out the Academic Policies & Regulations for more details.

Why did I get an Incomplete Grade?
Incomplete Grades are a result of one or more of the following: neglecting to submit any CSLOs, project work, assignments, quizzes or final exam. Attendance can also affect your grade.
How to file petition for graduation?
- Need to fill in the petition for graduation form and pay $120, it will take 3-5business days to process your request
- If you are paying through check then mail the petition for graduation form along with the check
- If you are paying through credit or debit cards then e-mail the credit card authorization form to the Accounting Department, there will be 2% transaction fee
Does ITU offer tuition payment plans? Monthly plans?
All checks must be submitted with a Promissory Note, and Student Payment Plan form . THERE IS A FEE FOR SWITCHING PAYMENT AND BOUNCED CHECKS ($50 FOR EACH CHECK).
- 1st Installment: Minimum $1,200 Upon Registration
- 2nd Installment: Minimum $1,200 Due by June 12, 2012
- Final Installment: Remaining Balance Due by July 12, 2012 (5% Interest On Remaining Balance From June 13 to July 12)
What are the admissions requirements for the MS of PhD program in Computer Science?

How soon do I need to register and how long is the acceptance waiting period once I apply for the Mobile Certificate program?
Registration opens up on April 9th. Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Please make an appointment with Veronica Ramirez (rveronica@itu.edu). She will help you through your registration process for Mobile Certificate Program at ITU.
If I am an undergraduate student, may I sign up for the Mobile Application Development Certificate Program?
Concurrent admissions for undergraduate students who have achieved 60 semester credit hours or 40 quarter credit hours towards bachelor’s degree from accredited institution of higher learning and who is in good standing at the current institution may apply to certificate program. Credits earned from certificate program may apply towards Master’s degree in related field.
If you are a US citizen or a permanent resident who resides in CA for the past 6 months, you are qualified to use our promotion for CA residents.

What is the procedure for a SEVIS transfer?
- Once you receive the acceptance letter and Transfer Form from ITU, you will need to submit that to your current school and make a request for the SEVIS transfer.
- To check the status of your SEVIS transfer, contact Amy at achaung@itu.edu. In most cases, an I-20 will be issued in 4-5 business days.
What are the minimum credits necessary to maintain a F1 status?
A student should enroll in 9 credits to maintain the F1 status for all trimester.
Can a student change his major after getting his initial I-20?
Yes.
What documents are required to change my status through USCIS?
Please contact an immigration law attorney regarding the process of changing your status and to verify that you have the required documents for USCIS.
Can a student on H1 or H4 status take weekend classes?
Yes, H1 and H4 students must receive approval from DSO to enroll in weekend classes.
What do I do if my SEVIS gets terminated?
You will need to apply for reinstatement.
What is the process for I-20 deferment?
You need to pay a I-20 deferment fee of $30 and e-mail Jose at djose@itu.edu regarding your request to apply for I-20 deferment.
Can a student study being on H1/H4?
Yes, provided their visas are valid, and registration information is approved by DSO.
What is the process for attaining an I-20 for F2 Visa?
- Students need to submit the following documents to Amy at achaung@itu.edu
- Copy of Marriage certificate
- Copy of Passport
- Copy of Birth Certificate
- It takes 4-5 business days to process the F2 I-20
What are the documents required by the VISA consulate for a F2 Visa?
In order to ensure that you provide the correct information, please contact an immigration law attorney. ITU only issues F2 I-20.
How can I obtain my Travel I-20?
All continuing students planning to re-enter the U.S. need a travel signature on their I-20 from a DSO at ITU.
Your I-20 form can only be endorsed for reentry to the U.S. if you intend and are eligible to continue your studies at ITU, or are pursuing post-completion of study OPT.
It cannot be endorsed if you have completed your program (even if you have not yet attended graduation) but have not yet applied for post-OPT employment.
Students on OPT must have a travel endorsement if their I-20 is less than 6 months old.
Documents needed for I-20 Travel Endorsement Approval:
- I-20 endorsement form completely filled out.
- Please bring in ALL initial I-20s complete forms given by ITU.
- Travel reason / proof of emergency
- Absence Approval from student records and professor.
- If currently registered in classes, then will be eligible for up to 3 weeks of emergency leave
- If on a semester break or traveling between semester’s students must return before the semester start date.
- Process time for travel request 2-3 weeks 8. For unfortunate circumstances please call the information center at ITU for processing.
How do I submit a Travel or Semester Break Request?
Travel Requests: Students should submit a travel request to Veronica Ramirez (rveronica@itu.edu). Students must submit a request 3 weeks prior to their travel. Students should not purchase their tickets unless they have approval in writing that their request was approved. OPT Approved students can submit travel request form to Jose Dominguez directly by e-mail (djose@itu.edu) as well as submitting in person.
Semester Breaks: Students should submit a request no later than May 1st to Veronica Ramirez (rveronica@itu.edu). Students will know whether they are approved or denied for semester break within 3 weeks of the date that it was requested. Requests received after May 1st, will be considered late and students might need to register for courses upon the denial of their semester break requests.

- You must fill out the Transcript Request Form and pay the transcript fee of $15. It will take approximately 3 business days to process your request. The Transcript Request Form can be found on the ITU website by going to “Student Resources” found under the “Admissions” page.

- If you are paying by check, then mail the Transcript Request Form along with your check for $15.

How do I obtain a student ID card?
You need to e-mail your first and last name, major, first trimester with ITU, student id number and a photograph to library@itu.edu. Processing time 5-7 business days.
How can I attain a bus pass for the VTA?
You must e-mail your first and last name, major, first trimester with ITU, student id and a photograph to library@itu.edu. Requests are normally processed in two weeks.
Can I use my personal laptop for classes?
Can I purchase a laptop from ITU?
Yes. ITU has Apple laptops available for purchase upon request.
- Student needs to fill the Laptop Regulations Form and send it along with the check to ITU’s mailing address. If the student is paying through debit/credit card, he/she needs to fill the Debit Card/Credit Card Authorization Form and send it along with the Laptop Regulations Form.
- Student is required to pay $900 upfront for the MACBOOK; we do not accept any post-dated checks anymore. $200 will be refunded after the student graduates.
- The student must come in person and pick up the laptop. We will not mail the laptops or give the laptop to any third-parties.

Can a student who has graduated buy a laptop from ITU?
No.
How many credits can be transferred from another university?
A maximum of 9 credits can be transferred to ITU. The minimum grade accepted per course for admissions is a B average. The courses should be related to the program for which you are enrolling at ITU. It takes 4-5 business days for the processing of transfer of credits.
How can I transfer credits from another school?
You must fill out the Petition to Course Transfer Petition Form along with the official transcripts and mail it to ITU mailing address. It takes 4-5 business days to process the request.
What is the correct process for transferring credits from another university?
Students need fill out a WES Application Form in the “Student Resources” section of the “Admissions” page. The form must then be submitted for evaluation or any global evaluators who does course by course evaluation.
When will I receive credits transferred from another university?
You will receive your credits transferred before the completion of your second trimester.
What is the procedure to transfer out from ITU?
Please submit the acceptance letter and transfer from the school he/she is transferring to Amy at achaung@itu.edu. Please contact Amy regarding transfer out.
NOTE: All degrees and transcripts must be evaluated if they are from other country except from INDIA.
